When my mom was pregnant with me, she sent my dad out for fish tacos every night. From her first trimester to her last hours of labor, all my mom wanted to eat was the Wahoo's #3 (two fish tacos, rice and a side of black beans). If it weren't for my lack of teeth, I'm sure I would have been born begging for corn tortillas.
So when it comes to finding the best tacos in a city, I take the responsibility very seriously. In California, my favorite spot was nestled in a corner of downtown Los Angeles. The Taco Tuesday special was so obscure, I still don't know the name of the joint. But I can tell you, the carne asada tacos were to-die-for!
Once I moved to Missouri, I had given up hope of finding a taco joint. Let's face it, Missouri isn't exactly known for Mexican food. Three years went by without even a taste of authentic salsa. When my best friend invited me to El Rodeo, I was ready for another disappointment. I took one bite and almost burst into tears. The meat was deliciously marinated, the tortillas warmed to perfection and the avocado salsa practically melted on my tongue. I was in heaven!
When I moved to New York City for the summer, I knew what I had to do first. In a city of eight million people, there had to be at least one person who could make a killer fish taco. And that's when I found La Esquina.
Now if you're prone to addiction, it's in your best interest to stop reading now. Every time I passed Spring Street, it took everything in my power to stay on the train. Sometimes I would even calculate if I had enough time to sneak away to the joint during my lunch hour. Yes, it's that good.
But it wasn't just the menu that kept me coming back to La Esquina; I couldn't get enough of the rich atmosphere. La Esquina is one of the city's best kept speakeasies. It may look like a corner deli from the street, but walk past the two security guards standing in front of the "Employees Only" door and you'll find an upscale, hidden restaurant. Around 10 p.m. every night, a slew of models and New York City A-listers parade down the stairs to taste the best tacos in the city.
If you forgot to make a reservation, there's no point in batting your eyelashes. The bouncers are serious about that list (they even carry walkie talkies!). But that doesn't mean you can't bite into the cuisine out front. They're called street-style tacos for a reason!
Hasta luego,

I miss LA and Tacos there, one of my favorites was a late night taco truck on Olympic that I would pass by on my way back from celebs premiering Hollywood and Vine.. the El Pastor was delicious.
I tried Wahoo's this summer in Colorado. They were pretty good :)
